STALLION DEFOE
A CHANGE OF QUARTERS
The lease of the Hurry On horse Defoe, who has been standing at the West Derby Stud, Ohau, for the past five seasons, is not being renewed for the coming season, and he has reverted to his owner, Mr. J. H. Marshall, of Titahi Bay.- Defoe has been sent down to Trentham this week and it is understood that he might be used in the new season in the Wairarapa.
The sire to. replace Defos at the West Derby Stud' has not yet been decided upon, ybut Mr. A. E. Preston is at present considering an offer of the Limond horse Golden Promise, who has been at the stud in Victoria the past two seasons and whose first crop of yearlings are said to show excellent quality.
Golden Promise, who is out of the Absurd —Bonny Portland mare Lady B-entinck, a sister to Lady Cavendish and a half-sister to Reremoana, was a high-class galloper whose wins in Australia included the A.J.C. Canonbury Stakes, the V.R.C. King's Plats, the Williamstown Stakes, the V.A.T.C. Bond Handicap, and the Mentone Cup, and but for an accident in his early training, which affected his later career, he would undoubtedly have built up a much better record. It is a distaff line that has not yet had a chance to show its male worth at the stud, as all its many good mile performers were geldings. The crossing in Golden Promise is similar to that in Veilmond, Agrion, and Honour, who were all by Limond out of an Absurd mare, and these three horses have each done well at the stud, Agrion having for several years been one of the leading sires in Western Australia.
