TRAVEL TO ENGLAND

FEW PERMITS FOR WOMEN

Only in exceptiona* circumstances will permits to leave New Zealand be issued to women desiring to travel to England. A fair number of applications have been received by the Government from women of various ages who, having originally come from England, wish to return, and other applications are from young New Zealandborn women who for various reasons desire either to make a trip to the Old Country or to settle there permanently.

The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Ho__ W. E. Parry) stated last night that it was held by the authorities to be in the interests of the women themselves that permits to travel to England at the present time were being withheld. "Dispatched from Home authorities," Mr. Parry said, "clearly indicate that permits should be granted only in cases of exceptional, or necessitous, circumstances and this rule is being closely followed. It is hard to have to disappoint the applicants, but the decision is made for their own safety; they will be away from the present-time dangers in England. The decision to evacuate British children to the Dominions should influence women against making applications to leave New Zealand just now."
