Mr. F. W. Ward has retired from the position of commissioner in charge of the Wellington district of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and has been transferred to the reserve of officers. The Chief Commissioner for New Zealand; Colonel Geo. Barclay, 0.8. E., V.D., in an order addressed to members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, thanks Mr. Ward for the valuable services which he has given to the brigade during a long period of years—services which are much appreciated and which have tended considerably to the advancement of the cause of St. John in the Wellington district. Mr. Ward's place has been taken by Mr. W. W. Dutton, who was previously assistant commissioner.

Mr. H. C. Holland, MJSc., A.1.C., of Woolston Tanneries, Ltd., Canterbury, who has returned, after a two years* visit to England, has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Leeds. Mr. Holland, who is a graduate of Canterbury University College, djd research at Leeds University and the Research Association's laboratories.

Mr. H. C. Hitchcock, a New Zealander who was in France at the time of the German invasion^ is safe at Gibraltar. Advice to this effect has been received by his father, Mr. E. Hitchcock, general manager ■of the Municipal Electricity Department, Christchurch. Mr. H. C. Hitchcock, who is a graduate of Canterbury University College, spent two years at Rugby under a British. Thomson Houston scholarship in electrical engineering. He then joined the consulting and contracting firm ot Messrs. Riley and Neate, Winchester. That firm secured a contract with the French, authorities, and Mr. Hitchcock was sent to France in charge of the job; in December. The last • news of him was from Grasse, near Cannes. He then expected to be moved, to Cherbourg.

The recent death of Mr. P. W.. Cameron, who had been a member or the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for two years, was referred to by the president (Mr. R. H. Nimmo) at a meeting of the council of the chamber last evening. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect,"

Mr. L. R- Wilde, passenger agent' for the Canadian Pacific Railway at* Yokohama, is on a brief visit to New Zealand.

Mr. E. E. Ackland, honorary agent for the New Zealand Government at Vancouver, has arrived on a short visit to the Dominion.

Mr. M.. G. B. Harvey, assistant architect to the Fiji Government, has arrived in New Zealand^ on furlough. Mr. Harvey formerly lived in Auckland^.

Messrs. W. A. Bodkin. A. H. Nordmeyer. H. S. S. Kyle, R. M. Macfarlane^ and W. M. C. Denham, MJP.s, arrived from the South Island by the steamefc express this morning.

Mr.. H. J. Bishop, of the Employers'' Federation, will leave for the SouthIsland tonight by the steamer express.
