RECRUITING IN NORTH

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, July 2.

Not since the first few weeks of the war has the Northern Military District exceeded the number of recruits who enlisted last week for the Expeditionary Force. The total, 1103, was almost 400 greater than that of the previous week. The Auckland area provided more than half with 595, compared with 443 the week before. The Hamilton area jumped from 135 to 327. Paeroa received 79 registrations, compared with 68 the week before, and Whangarei went from 85 to 102. Maori enlistments improved with a total of 55.

Reference was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) last night to the fact that now that the Sick, Wounded, and Distress appeal is over the whole conduct of collecting patriotic funds will be confined to the provincial councils. The Minister made it clear that only those organisations connected with and receiving endorsement- from the provincial councils will be allowed in future to make appeals for soldiers' comforts.
