THE CARBINE LINE
PURCHASE OF IRISH SIRE
One of the younger stallions who Impressed Mr. C. E. Robertson when on a visit to England last year was the Irish St. Leger winner Battle Song, a son of the Spearmint horse Spion Kop. This stallion has' now been secured for Mr. G, A.Kain, of Gladstone Parfc^,Qrafvand lie will brought Cut to theTDominion as soon as passage «;an be booked to join Man's Pal at »is new!, owner's stud. C^" •. ~_.... Battle Tsohg,;" who" cis a ■ g'rifnds6n""of Carbine, is claimed,to be one of the finest types of the',. thoroughbred in England. Spion Kop, his sire, is also the sire of the Derby winner Felstead, sire in turn of the great filly Rockfel, who won the One Thousand Guineas land Oaks and proved the best three-year-old of her year by winning the Champion Stakes by five lengths. It is a great classic winning line, as Felstead,* Spion Kop, and Spearmint All won the English Derby. Battle Song is very closely related to the noted Australian sire of stayers, The Buzzard, who is also by Spion Kop. His dam, Cradle Song, is a daughter of Hurry On, and six of her progeny are winners, including Hill Song, who curiously duplicated the performance of his full-brother by winning the Irish St. Leger and being very narrowly defeated in the Irish Derby. Hurry On mares have produced some exceptional horses during the past two seasons and the blood is very highly valued in England today. Verve, the grandson of Battle Song, is a daughter ,of Valve, dam also of the One Thousand Guineas winner Vaucluse and of The Buzzard's dam, Valescure.
