LONDON, June 10.
An eye-witness with the British Army in France says that the British. troops fought fierce rearguard actions today against steadily advancing German tanks and infantry. Our 4 men, driven back by greatly superior forces, held each position tenaciously till the order to withdraw was received.
All their courage and stubbornness were unable to stop the German advance, which has accelerated in this sector during the last 48 hours.
One famous battalion, ordered to retire in a few hours, spent the time in launching a violent'attack against the Germans. The fighting was so bitter that both sides declared an informal truce to bring in the dead and wounded.
