LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS
The' monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor. Mr. J. W. Andrews, presided.
Permission to hold a Sunday concert in aid of the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund on June 23 was granted. .
An application from the Municipal Band to hold a picture entertainment and Sunday concert in aid of the funds of the band was referred back to the band with the information that the band would have to comply with a resolution on the minutes of the council that the concert must be for a local charitable object and that no paid labour should be employed.
The library report showed that^ the library was still increasing in popularity, over 2000 more books being issued in May. 1940, than in Maj', 1939.
The Waiwhetu branch of the Plunket Society was granted permission to build Plunket. rooms on an area of council property known as Waterloo Square at an annual rental of £1, providing the plans are approved by the council. The Mayor said he had suggested to the committee interested in the erection of a dental clinic that the committee might arrange to unite with the Plunket Society. It was decided to name the reserve oft' the Western Hutt Road on which the ■ fernery is being built Jubilee Park. On the recommendation of the reserves committee Arbor Day will be celebrated by the planting of shrubs in Cambridge Terrace. Approval was given to the recommendation of the Fire Brigade that j Mr. T. S. Slinn be apponited deputy | superintendent. ! It was decided to exempt portions;
of Tama and Mudie Streets from the street widening provisions of the Public Works Act. •
Building permits for May showed that 23 permits for- buildings to the value of £17.816 had been issued, against 36 to the value of £22,897 for the same month in. 1939,
