PAINTERS' AWARD

The New Zealand Painters' and Decorators' Award issued by the Court of Arbitration is for a 40-hour five-day, week All work on Saturdays, except for those engaged on ship-repair work, is to be paid for at double-time rates. It is a breach of the|award to engage in Saturday work, except ship repair work, without a permit from the Labour Department. The minimum rate of wages fixed for painters, _ including time worked by them at painting, paperhanging, glazing, graining, signwriting, decorating, pictorial signwriting, poster and display artistry, paint and lacquer spraying where not covered by any other award, calcimining, distempering, and limewashing, and all preparatory work in connection with any, of these operations, is 2s 9d an hour. This does not apply to ticket-writing done by shop assistants as such for use in the establishment in which they are employed. For work done on Sundays, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Anzac Day, and the day of the painters' annual picnic, which is to be held on a Saturday, double time is to be paid. Where any of the above holidays is not generally observed, another holiday may be substituted by arrangement between the employer and his workers.

"The Court has continued the partial exemption for freezing companies which was inserted in several previous awards after hearing the parties concerned," says Mr. Justice Tyndall in a memorandum. "Mr. Monteith disagrees with the decision of the majority of the Court declining the request of the union that the award should provide for payment for statutory holidays, and in granting partial exemption to freezing companies."
