CONTRACT WORK
OVERSEA SHIPS
EXCELLENT RESULTS
EARLY EXTENSION
An announcement that the cooperative system of work on the waterfront had already been tried on three overseas ships with excellent results was made today by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb), who indicated that an early extension of this system of labour was contemplated. "I feel confident," said the Minister, "that in a very little while all our Home boats in respect to which speedy dispatch is essential will be loaded and discharged under the cooperative contract system. I intend to make a fuller statement regarding this method tomorrow.
"Since the Waterside Commission has been operating over fifty oversea boats have been worked on Sundays and holidays, and on overtime, at the request of the Commission^ to expedite their speedy turn round."
