TROTTING

MAH JONG IMPROVED

FINE PROSPECTS AT EPSOM

(By "Ariki Toa,")

The racing allotted Mah Jong recently has improved the mare considerably, and she is expected to develop into one of the best trotters bred in the North Island. At Claudelands last week she was very unlucky to be beaten, for she was just running through to the front with a mile to go when another competitor broke directly in front of her, and stopped her completely. She is down to contest the Stewards' Handicap at Epsom on Saturday, and it is not likely that the daughter of Maxegin will be at any fancy price. Change of Stables. , Chudic, who-.has shown promise of; developing into a more than useful! trotter, has had yet another change of, stables, and he will in future be trained j by C. S. Donald. The Wrack gelding has more than the average turn of speed, and only requires to develop solidity to win. several races from his present mark. Brilliant Pacer. Smile Again was most unlucky not to win a race at Forbury Park, and she is not likely to lose any of her supporters by her recent displays. This full-sister to Grand Mogul was inclined to break at the. start in her early races, but this fault has' been eradicated, and she now appears to be on the way to the best classes. Still in the South. Although the sale of Betty Boop was reported to a patron of M.' Stewart's stable, it is interesting to note that she has been entered for the Canterbury Park Meeting by W. J. Doyle, and she is still being trained by tlfe latter. Betty Bbop is probably the best three-year-old in commission, and her future is bright. : Well-bred Youngsters. The Hawke's sPay breeder Mr. J. Agnew has a couple of very promising youngsters in work from the champion trotting mare Worthy Queen. They are by Gallant Knight and U. bcott respectively, and already several tempting offers have been refused for the former juvenile., Fortex Consistent. One of the most consistent, pacers in training is Fortex; who has either won or been in the money in all of her starts this season. She is one of the everyday sort who do "nothing wrong, and in all probability she will earn further prize-money at the A-ucklahd Meeting on Saturday. .. . Unhoppied Two-year-old. It is not often that a two-year-old is asked to race unhoppied, but Gay Spark has had two runs in public without the straps. She is a daughter of Nelson Parrish and Cogent, and consider--1 ing her limited experience she has been responsible for encouraging displays. First Success, v . : * Marina Rey, who was successful in breaking her maiden status at Nelson on Monday, is a five-year-old bay mare by Great Bingen from Dillon Key, by Rey de Oro. She has previously started on twelve occasions without showing any fßrm.' "'** T -~ • A Smart Customer. An interesting acceptor for the Adams 'Memorial Handicap at Epsom on Saturday is Equipoise, who has not raced for some time, but is reported to be | going well in training. At his best he is a great little pacer, and has a mileand a half record of 3min 15 2-ssec.
