A UNION PROTEST

At the present sitting of the executive council of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, states an officially supplied report, "grave concern was expressed and exception taken to the combined attacks on

workers' conditions. The council was of the opinion that the time was overdue for co-operative effort by all.sections of the community to assist the Government in the prosecution of the

war and maintenance of maximum production, instead of causing dissension by. useless bickerings indulged: in for selfish sectional purposes. The following resolution was unanimously agreed to:—"That the executive Council of the A.S.R.S. views with grave concern the efforts of chambers of commerce, farmers' unions, and other exploiting sections in their subversive efforts to persuade the Government to institute a 44 or 48 hour week. We condemn their attitude and consider that they are only • using the war situation as a means of ■" reducing the standard of living and conditions of the workers of New Zealand.- Their only concern appears to be to make increased profits at the expense of our soldiers overseas, and the working class of this country. They, themselves, are not prepared to make the sacrifices -that they are demanding from others. We urge upon the Government to consider the advisability of commandeering the profits and wealth of the Dominion as the fh-st step to an increased effort in winning the war.'" ■-■ . .
