LOCAL RESPONSE

PLEA TO BUSINESS MEN

Some disappointment was expressed by the president. of the Wellington Chamber oi Commerce, Mr. R. H. Nimmo, last evening at the relatively poor attendance of members of the council at the recent business men's meeting on behalf of the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund Appeal. The meeting had been held in the afternoon, and he had noticed few members of the council present, he said.

Captain S. Holm: Maybe members had work to do that day.

Mr. Nimmo: The Empire is facing its greatest, crisis to date, and we expect everyone to help the national effort.

Mr. M. G, C. McCaul: We have to feed the people, even in wartime.

Mr. Nimmo: And* we also have an obligation to our sick and wounded.

Captain Holm: The meeting would have been better held in the evening.

Mr. Nimmo; It was nevertheless a great success. So far Wellington has been very unresponsive to appeals, and I hope the commercial men of the city will do their part in this' worthy effort. There is no more human appeal nor more opportune time in which to launch it.

A list of contributions received by the Wellington provincial committee of the appeal appears on page, 6.
