SHIPPING HISTORY
The romance tin deriving the history Of s)iipi>ing is inseparably bound up with New Zealand's history. Islands as remote as New Zealand is from the Old World .must necessarily depend on ships for their continued existence as a thriving colony, and any Centennial surveys of New Zealand's history must of course refer, and that at some length, to the part played in the country's development by the shipping services. Very, timely, therefore, are three publications which have recentlyappeared, and which review in detail the part played by the three main shipping companies which have SO materially assisted in New Zealand's progress and prosperity. These three books are:—"History of Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, Limited, 1875^1940," "Clipper Ship to Motor Liner: The Story of the New Zealand Shipping Company, 1873-1939," and "The' Flag, of the Southenr-Cross," which is the history of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Ltd., 1858-1939., Each is well illustrated with photographs of famous ships of thft past and present, and with portraits of those .who have taken a leading part in-guiding the", destinies of the companies.. It is. ; only through the perusal Of such records as are presented in the^e three > books that one realises the gigantic strides made in the shipping world during the last fifty ;or sixty years, and New Zealanders, can,be justly.proud of the record of the three shipping companies which have served them so well.
