MONTH IN GAOL
A sentence of one month's imprisonment with hard labour was imposed upon Harry Petley, a blacksmith, aged 22, who appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, charged with attempting to obtain from the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., £30 by means of a false pretence. Detective-Sergeant W. R. Murray said that Petley, who was employed as night porter at a hotel, took a cheque form belonging to his employer and filled 4t in for £30. He went to the Hutt, where he attempted to cash the cheque, but inquiries were made immediately, and he walked out of the bank. When approached by Detective G. Hogan he frankly admitted the facts. .
