TROTTING

GOLD CHIEF GOOD

(By "Ariki Tim,")

Gold Chief, who gave Walteri Moore ! such a stern battle in the^ Nursery Stakes that the winner was forced to | establish a new mile record for two-year-olds, had previously shown' a fine burst ;of speed in trials at matinee meetings, and: his splendid showing caught few unawares. He is by Key de Oro from Dusolina (2.8 1-5), by Drusus from Doraldina, dam of Daphne de Oro (4.25 4-5), who .in turn produced Tim worthy, Special Edition, and Latest Edition.;- This fariiily has been a prolific producer far something like half a century, and there" does not seem any chance of the strain running out. Melbourne Derby,

The. crack Australian pacing ..three-year-old Admirer, by Robert Dei?by from Lulu Love, won his fourth classic of the season when he scored an easy victory in the pacers* division of the Melbourne Derby at,, Ascot on March 4. Although momentarily headed by • Lawn King ■■■ approaching the home turn, Admirer came away to beat the Lawn Derby colt by 12 yards in the race record time of 2min lS^sec. The trotters' division was won by Grand Echo, by Royal's Echo —Klein Ribbons, who defeated the Walla Walla filly Walladown by 16 yards in 2min 30£ sec.

Appeal Upheld.

A recent exchange from Adelaide states that the appeal of the Victorian reinsman George Gath, who was recently disqualified for twelve -months over the running of the New Zealand-bred gelding Takanini, has been upheld. Gath is well known in the Dominion, having previously brought across teams to compete at Addington.1

First Shake Sold

First Shake, who recently gained a long-overdue win when she was successful at the Manawatxi Meeting, has been sold, and she has joined up with W. Heginbotham's stable at Waverley. This mare has been racing most consistently for the past twelve months without gaining a thick end of a stake, and now that she has broken the "ice" it would not be surprising to find her paying her way in much better company, especially at meetings where the class is not particularly strong. - ■■.•-.,..■

Ace High At Hawera.

Several years ago, A. J. Corrigan,

of Hawera, was well known as one of the leading trainers and reinsmen of the North Island, but he has not been actively associated with the sport for some years or more. However, he is again back in the game, and in addition to Red Flush, trained at Te Rapa by M. Stewart, he has acquired the Jack Potts gelding Ace High, which he is training himself at Hawera. Ace High has never really lived ,up to early expectations, but he possesses a fine burst of speed, especially over a long distance, and he should, not be hard to place. Grand Mogul's Owner. Grand Mogul won the Grand Final of the Inter-Dominion Championships in the name and the colours of the Dunedin sportsman Mr. G. J. Barton, though .Perth reports indicate that the sale Cat £200) to Mr. J. Sykes, of Fremantle, was finalised, i5Ut the necessary papers had not arrived from Christchurch and the transfer could not be put through by the Western Australian Association. However, it is stated that Mr. Sykes will receive; all stake-money earned by Grand Mogul. Logan Pointer Mares. 1 The feature of recent trotting meetings has been the consistency with

which winners have been credited to the! progeny of Logan Pointer mares, -and; their record as producers is mounting with every meeting. Both Logan Derby and Grand Mogul, stars of the Inter-Dominion Championships, were both out of Logan Pointer mares* Logan Pointer was the leading sire of the Dominion from the 1922-23 seasoa until the 1927-23 season; he was secoird in the two • following terms and was again on top in'the 1930-31 season. His progeny have won more than. £230,000 in stakes. ■ Greatest of them were Harold Logan. Logan Chief, Native Chief, Prince Pointer, • Jewel Pointer, Cardinal * Logan, Acron, Trampfast, Logan Park, Loganwood, Onyx, Logan Lou, Bonny Logan, and Great Logan. His mares have pro* duced many notable horses, including Logan Derby, Grand Mogul, Blait Athol, Silver de Oro. Cloudy Rang«. Royal Silk, Tempest, Nicoya, Free Advice, Kemptou, Kingcraft, Royal Romance, Graham Direct, Rey Spec, Ironside, Supertax, Dillon Logan, Plutus, Regal Voyage. Windsor Lass, and the Sapling Stakes winner Frisco Lady. Logan Pointer was imported from America by F. Holmes in 1915 and lrved until 1925, when he was. kicked by anotner horse and had to be destroyed. - ■■■■-.
