SECOND ECHELON

WELLINGTON STAFF'S GIFT

TEN THOUSAND CIGARETTES

In addition to, a number of donations which unmistakably have been made with considerable self-sacrifice on the part of the individuals concerned, and as- such are most obviously sincere expressions, of recognition and appreciation of the sacrifices the men who, enlist for overseas are making for the people .of this country as a whole, the National: Patriotic Fund Board, whose office is in Weilingtony has been given other evidence of enthusiastic backing, of its efforts to do everything possible for the welfare of the armed forces. A case in point is the action of the staff, of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, Wellington* who are providing a handsome gift of cigarettes for the members of the Second Echeloh bf the Second New Zealand ■ Expeditionary Force. . V ,

Recently representatives of the A.M.P. Society staff were in touch with the secretary-treasurer of the National Patriotic Fund Board, Mr. G. A. Haydeh, when they made known the desire to do something in this connection for the next batch of troops to leave these shores for overseas. Yesterday afternoon two members of the staff called on Mr. Hay den and as a result of contributions made in the meantime they were able to hand over sufficient money to donate 10,000 cigarettes for the Second Echelon.

The action of the A.M.P. staff is the more appreciated because it was taken on their, own initiative. It may suggest to the employees of other business concerns that here is a field in which they, too; can do something on behalf of the men who are leaving to fight for the Allied cause

On behalf of the board, 'Mr. Hayden conveyed to the representatives of the A.M.P. Society warm thanks for the action of the society's Wellington stan*.

The cigarettes will be distributed among the men on board ship.
