HIGH STANDARD

RACING Ifa MINOR EVENTS

The quality of the fields in the minor events at Trentham yesterday, excepting the two-year-old handicap, did not appear to be quite up to the best Trentham standard, but that view required revision at the end of the day. Minority and Trench Law have showed themselves gallopers, well above average, and the two-year-old place-get-ters, particularly Lambourn and Cetewayo, might turn out the stars of their age. AN OUTSIDER AGAIN. About the Rimu Highweight Handicap it is mainly necessary to put on record the fact that once again an outsider succeeded in an opening event at Trentham. This rule has had few exceptions y in -recent years. Student Prince, whose racing for some time has been in the role of a hurdler, succeeded through his stamina and he returned a win dividend approaching a score. Student Prince, without being forced along, remained in sixth place to the straight, where Hunting Moments and High Peer, who had opened a break on the others, were tiring and coming back. Below the false rail Good Health and War Cloud were displacing the leaders, but then Student Prince came very fast along the outer, «nd though he was at the end of his

tether approaching the post he stalled off a late challenge from Gaelic Song by over half a length. Gaelic Song, the favourite, looked possibly a good thing beaten by challenging too late. She was just ahead Of Student Prince most of the way, but did not get out soon enough to issue her claim. At the post she was rapidly overhauling her victor. Good Health (who moved up on the turn) and War Cloud (always one of the first four) had a keen tussle for third money and the former stayed on a shade the better, his best showing yet. Both these horses are by Lord Warden. High Peer, made rather much use of in taking on Hunting Moments, tired into fifth, and Good Sun was plodding on next. Ruling Star was at the rear with Thrasos practically throughout, neither hitting out freely at any stage. Hunting Moments dashed lengths clear at the seven furlongs but she had run herself to a standstill at the straight. FOUR IN NEAR LINE. There was a spectacular finish to the Trial Plate, in which four horses crossed the iine as a foursome, the judge distinguishing Areas and Charles Edward as dead-heaters for first by half a head from Moradabad, with Dainty Dell less than a head away fourth. The quartet were well clear of the rest. Moradabad, who was in front at once from the rail position in a snap dispatch immediately on receipt of. the all-clear signal, had to be ridden hard from the word go to keep her place, and but for that she must have won. As it was she fought on gamely when challenged first by Dainty Dell and then by Areas and Charles Edward, and she looked most unlucky to go under. Areas and Charles Edward were always well placed, and they followed Moradabad, Jungle King, Valiant Lady, and Debretts round the turn. Charles Edward was up third behind Moradabad and Debretts on reaching the straight, with Areas on the rail and Dainty Dell issuing a claim along the outer. Dainty Deli looked the winner at the distance, but she finally weakened a shade in. the last few strides and that cost her, even a place. Charles Edward, on the outer of the line of four, appeared to be running on the best of them, but Areas also finished resolutely. Authoress was a very pronounced favourite for this race, but she was always too far back to be dangerous and she was unable to make much impression when she essayed a challenge, "from the top of the straight.' Stylist was running on fifth, a useful effort, and Pink Lad also did weir to finish sixth after being slow away. Tavoy moved up handy early, but weakened into seventh, ahead, of Authoress.' The best of the others were Dark Water, Augment, and Happy Ending. Debretts, Jungle King, and Valiant Lady all faded at the business end. IMPRESSIVE EFFORT. Lambourn, having his first race since succeeding on the final day of the summer fixture at Trentham, stayed on too solidly for his opposition in the Pacific Handicap. This is a race that has often marked out the champions of the season, and Lambourn looks to be one of the best juveniles yet seen out this term. His real test will come if he is started against Beau Vite in the Challenge Stakes tomorrow. It was impossible not to be impressed with Lambourn's performance. Though an excellent start was effected, Lambourn, who had drawn No. 5 marble, did not show the brilliance away of many of the others and he was still well back on reaching the course proper. At tiiat point Cetewayo drew ! out from the leaders, but when Lambourn challenged down the outer he finished with such resolve that he was racing to victory half a furlong from the post. Lambourn is a half-brother by Bulandshar to Beaupartir, and he is a fine-looking brown colt who promises to develop into a splendid stamp of three,-year-old. He has now raced on,five occasions, and he has won the last two of them. He carries the colours of his breeder, Mr. T. H. Lowry, for whom he is trained by Mrs. A. W. McDonald at Awapuni. Cetewayo showed the brilliance expected of him from No. 7 marble, but he was found lacking a race when the last furlong was entered. He ran with Absolve, Air Flight, and Kadina to the course proper and then quickly asserted superiority over those opponents', but he succumbed after a brief fight when challenged by the winner. His rider did not appear anxious to draw the whip till it became absolutely necessary. As it was his first outing since.he won in October, however, he was by no means disgraced, and he might be not far short of the best among the season's juveniles. Nigntbeam was never far from the leaders and he finished on best of the others for a very creditable third. Cherry Bay, from the, winner's stable, came from well back for fourth, with Pleading, Kentucky. Absolve, Locrian, Kadina. and Dyne best of the remainder. Stencil was showing up at the crossing but did not run on. Air Flight, one of the leaders, to the course, faded over the final couple of furlongs. MAJORITY'S RELATIVE. The Tinakori Handicap was a very close betting race among Great Night, Minority, and ..Millament, who were separated by only a few pounds on each pool. The actual favourite, Great Night, failed badly, but Minority was the winner and Millament third. Minority was backed at the October fixture, when he missed, and then aftfer a spell he reappeared at New Plymouth last week to open his winning score. ' That form was better than it appeared, as Minority had to be good to win yesterday. After being left some lengths at the start, he moved up brilliantly to fourth at the end of the first. two furlongs, then in the straight stayed on just too solidly for Rehearsal, who came home strongly through the field., , , n -i Minority, is a three-year-old .black half-brother by Foxbridge to Majority, and, though he has not the size of his , relative, he is somewhat like him m general conformation. He has had only seven races in all and his latest form has been most attractive Rehearsal was always well back m the running till he burst through in the straight, and on this showing his return to the winning, list should not be long delayed. . , Millament was out in front witft King Gustavo after a furlong and she outstayed the southerner for third, though she was beaten pomtlessly by the first pair. Ruatiti, who lost a forward early position, and Great Swoop were finishing on among the others,. Great Night was at the rear when the field settled* down, and though she showed grea vt pace in racing forward to the two leaders on the turn she went off the course and finished last except for City Song. CUP HORSE AMONG HACKS. Trench Law was a Cup horse among hacks in the Silverstream Handicap, in which all. the places were filled . by Trentham candidates. With his weight, which was not at all excessive after his recent form, lowered 71b by an apprentice allowance, he completely outstayed the field opposed to him. Trench Law, though in the middle of the field when they settled down, was not too happily placed to challenge on the home turn, where Waka and Siglow were setting the main for Colibri, Serena.ta, -Pearl of Asia, and Scold. However, his rider extricated him at an opportune moment and was free to lodge his claim down the outer at the false rail, and from that point he was definitely a class too good for the "others. Titter was a very creditable second, and, better served in the running over the middle portion, she might have troubled the winner more. It was one of her best performances. Siglow had apparently every chance out in front, but that is not the way he goes his best races. Serenata was fourth, but she, too, was always well enough placed. Scold did not have the clearest of passages. Piastre was finishing on well from the rear. Waka, Pearl of Asia, and Colibri all tired in the home run. Chief Lord ran only fairly, and Arabic was never a possibility. .
