OLD ENGLISH CHINA

EXHIBITION OPENED

The special exhibition of English china at the Dominion Museum was opened yesterday afternoon. His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway, who was accompanied byLady Galway and Mr. Heathcote Helmore, was welcomed by Professor H. B. Kirk, chairman of the management committee. Professor Kirk, after weli coming their Excellencies and reading a number of apologies for absence,' remarked that one of the aims of the j Dominion Museum was to develop and encourage culture by holding spejcial exhibitions from time to time. [The present, exhibition had been rendered possible through the generosity of private owners and 'of other museums, and he expressed appreciation of the work done by those responsible for it.

Lord Galway said it gave him great pleasure to open such an interesting loan collection, and people who came to see it would gain experience and knowledge of how English china, had played its part in the decorative art of the home. After briefly reviewing the work of the various china factories in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, his Excellency remarked that the arrangement of old china was important. If there was too much of it, as was often the, case, it resembled a shop window, and on the other hand it should riot be too sparse. It should be made to harmonise with its surroundings as far as possible. A study of the present exhibition would help, towards making homes more beautiful. . ' A:l., .' ,' ■,-: ;■.... ■
