AMERICAN SHIPS

PURCHASE BIDS RECEIVED

(Received February 9, 11.15 a.m.)

WASHINGTON, February 8. Five companies have submitted bids to purchase twelve ships for the Aus-tralian-Far East service. The purchase bids ranged from 76,000 dollars to 160,000 dollars per ship.

A Washington message on December 15 stated the Maritime Commission is disposing of 14 ships, comprising the American Pioneer, Puget Sound, and Orient Lines. The conditions of sale or charter are that there should be at least nine sailings to New Zealand or Tasmania annually, plus nine to the Far East, or, alternatively, 20 or 26 annually to the Far East with the privilege of calling at New Zealand and Tasmania en route.
