(CENTENNIAL TENNIS

PLAY AT MIRAMAR

PAINTERS-FINE SHOWING

Yesterday afternoon's .matches ..in trie Centennial tennis tournament at Miramar produced much to appeal to the' large, gallery that watched the principal events. The gusty northerly lulled for a brief space only after luncheon, but;the, players in the later matches appealed to have accustomed themselves more or less to the conditions and "gave improved displays in consequence. -

The third round men's singles between :J; Crawford (Australia) and S. Painter (Wellington) was exhilarating to watch,-not so much for its spectacular play, as 'for its pitting of youth against experience. It : was not exgected, '.that Painter-; would extend rawford but, allowing for the disconcerting effect of the northerly gusts on. the' Australian's play,' he did remarkably well. Painter/ took the first set, .4-6.'. ■ His evident preference was for-theibackline; but-, he, managed - to Bring off.spme amazing recoveries from mid-court. Crawford at this stage was making errors for which the wind was obviously largely responsible, but his low volleying won him points. The second set went to the Australian, 6-3, and fairly indicated the exchanges, as did the third set, which Crawford also won, 6-1, but ~in the fourth arid decisive set Painter made-a great fight. The games alternated.. with Painter driving steadily on both hands, and volleying, occasionally to good purpose andiCrawford exploiting most of the, shots in,his well-stocked.locker. - R. Barnes, the young ; Australian, played his best tennis .of the tournament against D. G. France (Wellington), whom he defeated in straight sets. He scored numerous winners with beautiful passing shots. Deep, well-placed drives to the backline which made openings for advances to the net gave.Miss T. Coyne (Australia) her convincing win over Miss T. Poole (Canterbury), who, nevertheless, conceded little to a strong and varied attack.

J. Bromwich; (Australia), made com?aratively short work of M. J. Corich Canterbury) with deep, two-fisted drives, to; the Canterbury man's backhand or else sharply-angled shots. from close in,down an open court. The five-set match which N. G. Sturt and D. G: France (Wellington), won from R. Barnes (Sydney) and K. W. Dyer (Wellington) was-one of the most attractive doubles encounters 'of the day. Sturt was his usual imperturbable self, and. with, France playing well up to his best, doubles form, the-pair took a power- of beatings Both of their opponents produced attractive ' tennis, Barnes playing a.heady, graceful game that frequently evoked . applause. Sturt's smashing was a big- factor, in the.final' result. V -

The wind was particularly, gusty.for the match between Crawford and Bromwich and~ W. T. Pouritney (Auckland)'and R.J. Sharpe (Hawked Bay). Against the experienced Australian pair Pountney shaped, especially well, and his placements frequently, caught the Australians out'of. position. Sharpe, however, could not settle down; and the, result of the match- was' never In doubt. .

.'Many good rallies were seen in 'the match between A. D. Brown -and- .C. Angas Canterbury) and Q. Bold (Wellington) and I. Willis (Wellington). Bold's placements were often.unretu'rnr able, but Angas's consistency and Brownfs fqrdeful driving and. positional play carried the day. Results were as follows: — / MEN'S SINGLES.
