Movements in the weekly statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as at the close of business on Monday, February 5, 1940, are shown hei'eunder:— Sterling exchange (in New Zealand currency) held by the Reserve Bank shows an increase of £516,781 and is now £9,242,501, compared / with £4,074,954 at this time last year. Advances to .the Government for purposes other than to the Marketing Department are less by £100,000, but are shown at £20,910,000 as 'against £11,950,000 a year ago. Last weefe these advances were at the record figure of £21,010,000. ■ x>?£?~ n note issue has contracted by £172,735, but at £18,141,720 it is still very high when compared with £15,206,254 at this time last year, and £14,067,973 for the first week in February, 1938.
