MILE CHAMPIONS

CENTENNIAL CONTEST

Pride of place at the amateui* athletic meeting to be held at the Basin : Reserve tomorrow afternoon is rightly (given to : the Centennial Mile, an event (for which the best mile runners in the Dominion are entered. The fact that Empire Games representatives and New Zealand and provincial champions are being brought together gives this mile race considerable importance, and the calibre of the competitors serves to make the "field" one of the best that has ever contested a one-mile race in this country. The noted runners entered are Matthews :and Boot (winners at: the Empire Games). Pullar (Wellington and New Zealand champion), Wade (Auckland champion), and Dickie (Canterbury champion). Preceding the race there will be a march around the ground by the New Zealand Air Force Band.

Many other events are to be decided at what promises to be one of the best meetings held in Wellington for some time', and the performances of the competitors will be viewed with particular interest in-view of the prospects at the New Zealand championship meeting. Wellington has numerous strong contenders for New Zealand titles and they will be in action tomorrow.

The Kiwi A.A. Club has received a challenge from the Masterton Club for the Heenan Boomerang for junior relay racing, and it is proposed to run this special challenge relay as an added attraction at the Basin Reserve tomorrow. Three of Wellington's most prominent junior athletes, J. D. A'Court, M. G. Leonard, and J. P. Fox, will be in the Kiwi team, and Masterton will have some outstanding talent. A very even race between two. strong teams is expected. Each runner will cover 220 yards.
