LATE CAPTAIN HERD
LARGELY-ATTENDED
FUNERAL
Led by a band composed of members of nearly every band in Wellington and conducted by Bandmaster's E. Franklin, and J. J. Drew, the funeral of the late Captain T. Herd, one-time conductor of the Wellington Garrison Band, left his former residence, 22 Thompson Street, yesterday afternoon. No members of the Wellington Artillery Band were able to be present, however, as they went into camp last week.
• The service at the home was conducted by the Yen. Archdeacon Bullock, assisted by the Rev. T. F. Fagg, after which the procession, led by the band playing "The Garland of Flowers," proceeded to St. Peter's Church.
At the graveside at Karori the band played Captain Herd's favourite hymns, "Abide With Me" and "Nearer My God to Thee." The service was conducted by Archdeacon Bullock.
The pallbearers were Messrs. Ralph Herd (Marton), Hugh Herd, Gordon Herd, Samuel^ Waters (nephews), J. G. Osborne (secretary, New Zealand Bands' Association), and W. C. Stevens (Wellington Savage Club). Among those present were Captain. Thomas Buckley (Auckland, associated for many years with the old Wellington Garrison Band), Messrs. W]. Gladstone Hill (organiser of the Wellington Bands' Association), Major H. C. Goffin (Salvation Army), Messrs. E. Palliser (president of the New Zealand Brass Bands' Association), H.. B. Oakes and W. Sneddon (members of the Hinemoa Band, which toured England under Captain H,erd), R. A. Wright, E. S. Dixon, J. D. Quinn, E. Drake, William Herd (brother), E. Walker, W. McLaughlin, T. Goodchild, N. and R. G. Denton, B. Keesing, A. R. Meek, R. Waters, E. J. Peare, J. W. Andrew! (Mayor of Lower Hutt), P. Brunett, C. Forrest, L. Jacobs, R. D. Christie, and R. Faulkner.' Prominent in the procession were 21 old members of the Wellington Garrison Band, who had played under Captain Herd.
