U.S. MAIL BAN

SEA AS WELL AS AIR

SYSTEM OF AFFIDAVITS

(Received January 27, il a.m.)

WASHINGTON, January 26.

The.Post Office order barring from air mail addressed to the belligerent countries everything except written letters and copyrighted material such as books and films also applies to seaborne mail to eighteen belligerent countries and forty of their colonies and Dominions, including Australia and New Zealand, except upon ,an affidavit that the packages have been transferred to foreign ownership. Unless letters and packages appearing to contain valuables are marked "affidavit filed" they will not be dispatched.

It is hoped1 that the mail restrictions will remove the majn cause of the search of United States air mail at Bermuda. It is explained that in the case of seaborne mail the restrictions will only apply to the parcel post and second-class mail, and not to sealed letters.
