WILDING SHIELD
CANTERBURY'S GOOD START
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) 1 CHRISTCHURCH, January 26.
Canterbury's Lawn tennis team made a good start in defence of the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield against Wellington today, finishing the day's play with five matches to one. Wellington's task tomorrow is accordingly difficult, but the team appears to have the ability to fight back. Today the Wellington players performed so well in the doubles that their indifferent singles form —they lost all four singles in straight sets—appeared far from a true measure of their capabilities. The matches today were played in "hot, sunny weather, but a strong north-west wind, which'grew in force as the afternoon advanced, made conditions difficult for the players. Results, Canterbury names first:—
Singles.—A. ~D. Brown beat D. G. France, 6-2, 6-3; C, Angas beat N. V. Edwards, 6-3, 8-6; H.-A. Barnett beat R. McKenzie, 6-0, 7-5; R. G. Pattinson beat R. Howe, 6-3, 6-4.
Doubles.—Brown- and Angas beat Howe and McKenzie, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4; Barnett and Pattinson lost to Edwards and France, 1-6, 5-7.
