The Royal Victoria Yacht Club international' gold/challenge cup has been sold as old gold to London bullion merchants for a sum which is ' understood to be £500

Winners of the famous trophy, which ranks second in importance to the America Cup, have included King Edward VII, who was successful with the Britannia when he was Prince of Wales, and the ex-Kaiser with the Meteor. The last year in which the cup was raced for was 1936, when Mr. T M Sopwith won it with the Endeavour 11. The first race for the trophy was held in 1893 in response to a challenge issued by the New Yoru Yacht Club. In that race; the Britannia beat the American ; yacht Navajo and the cup remained, in King Edward's possession for several years afterwards.
