SOUTH AFRICA AND WAR

DEBATE CONTINUES

PREPARATION OF DEFENCES

CRITICISED

(Daventry Broadcast.)

LONDON, Thursday Night,

In Cape Town the House of Assembly was again crowded for the third day of the debate on General Hertzog's motion to end the state of war with

Germany

The member for Pretoria Central declared that South Africa could thattk heaven for General Smuts, who today was putting South Africa in a position to face the world unashamed. He accused the former Defence Minister, Mr. Pirow, of having the defence forces deplorably lacking in equipment. Another speaker on the Government side accused General Hertzog of seeking a truce with the King's enemies.

Among speakers who supported General Hertzog was the Minister of Lands in the Hertzog Government, General Kemp. He urged that they must wipe out British Imperialism, but even more important, he continued amidst laughter, they must wipe out Smutsism.

The new South African Minister to France presented his credentials to President Lebrun this morning. He said: "My Government will do all in its power to ensure the final victory on which depends the liberty of mankind." The President replied: "Tn this struggle, in which the stakes are so high, the assistance of your country will be appreciated as it was 25 years ago."
