DUTCH WEST INDIES
POSSIBLE DEFENCE BY U.S.A.
WASHINGTON, January 24.
The fact that United States warships are on manoeuvres near the Dutch West Indies suggests that the United States is prepared to defend the islands if the Netherlands .is drawn into war.
This links up with the conference of the American Ambassador, Mr. Gordon, with Queen Wilhelmina last week, and recalls President Roosevelt's declaration since the war began that the United States would not countenance the transfer of Western Hemisphere territories.
