Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong: northwesterly winds. Occasional showers with fine intervals.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for.the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for variable winds over the southern half of the South Islands with southerly directions predominating. Elsewhere moderate to strong northerlies to westerlies may be expected. The weather will be changeable and further rain, is-probable in most districts, but chiefly in those with a westerly aspect. Temperatures will continue mild, but will become slightly cooler in the south.
A complex disturbance has continued moving over the Dominion, and last night a deep cyclonic centre developed in the souths Considering'its intensity, winds were surprisingly light, but there were sharp and very heavy falls. of rain instead of the more usual steady moderate rains. Light to fresh northerly winds have been experienced, except in the far south where winds have been rather variable. • Yesterday morning the weather was fair to fine in eastern areas south of East Cape, but elsewhere the weather has been dull with general rain. The rain area extended yesterday evening over the whole country and there were some very heavy falls, accompanied in many places by electrical disturbances. Greymouth reports 356 points, Otira 311, Inglewood 289, Arthur's Pass 284, and Wellington 264. Temperatures yesterday were mild, to warm, but they are rather cooler today. \
Auckland's weather yesterday was dull and unpleasant, with intermittent rain which totalled 59 points. The wind was a fresh northerly and temperatures were mi1d,,70 and 64 degrees being the maximum and minimum respectively. Similar conditions were prevailing again this morning, with the exception that the wind had changed to a moderate north-westerly.
Wellington's weather was dull and unsettled. There were some light showers in the morning and heavier ones in the afternoon. About 8.30 p.m. the rain set In steadily and heavily and continued throughout the night, a total of 264 points being recorded at Kelburn up to 9 a.m. today. The wind has been a moderate north-westerly and temperatures yesterday were warm, 72.1 degrees being the maximum and 56.1 degrees the minimum. It was still raining early this morning, but shortly after 9 o'clock the weather cleared.
Christchurch had a. moderate east-dorth-easterly wind all day and the weather was overcast. Intermittent light rain fell during the afternoon and totalled five points. Temperatures were mild to warm and ranged between 70 and 59.3 degrees. The sky cleared last night, but it was overcast again this morning, the wind being a light northerly. It was cloudy to overcast in Dunedin with a north-easterly breeze. Some moderate rain fell last night, but the weather by this morning had improved again, the wind having changed to a moderate southerly. WEEKEND PROSPECTS. The meteorological situation is at present rather involved, and there are no clear indications as yet as to the weather prospects for the latter part of the weekend. The probabilities are for a continuance of northerly winds with changeable weather.
