BIG CROWDS AT THE TROTS

The Wanganui Trotting Club experienced two marvellous day for its summer meeting arid the big crowds thoroughly enjoyed the outings. The gayest sheer and cool linens with big shady hats were most popular. Among the race-goers were Mesdames G. J. Adams, F. K. Turnbull, J. Hoult (Palmerston North), E. Walpole, J. C. Small, R. Palmer, I. Billinghurst, R. Jackson J. Todd, J. Howe, A. Currin, W>; NrGoss, E. Poynter, C. Pearce, I. Newman, J. Alexander, A. McNab, 1 M. B. Hirst, J. Mitchell (Longburn) M. L. Coghill C. Stewart, G. Cooke, G. O'Halloran, J. H. Hill, T. Graham, G. Bremeir, W. Andrews (Taranaki), A. Walker* H. Miller, N. Grant (Palmerston North), Misses K. Glenn, B. Hill* J. Cleland, O. Marchant, G. Mann, and K. Hatrick. Purser-—Cochlran Wedding. St. Andrew's Church, Marton, was decorated with blue and cyclamen flowers for the wedding of Betty, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Cochran, of Marton, and Howard, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Purser, of New Plymouth. The bride, escorted by her father, wore a gown of pearl satin, trained and with, long sleeves. The tulle veil was held.with gardenias. The bridesmaids, Misses Isobel Cochran and Peggy. Purser, wore cyclamen and pale green taffeta respectively. Messrs. D. Purser and K.j Cochran attended the bridegroom. A large reception was held afterwards in the spacious grounds of the bride's parents' home.. The big' marquee and the trees were gay with coloured lights. M&s.. Cochran wore petunia ripple crepe and Mrs. Purser blue shot taffeta with violet accessories. Wedding Guests. Mesdames G. Douglas, iP. Fleet, J. Julian, and Mr. and; Mrs. Dowthwaite, of Wellington, were in Patea at the weekend for the Cosford-Carey wedding. Mrs. J. White was hostess recently at an enjoyable party for Miss Carey. Garden Circle. Mr^and Mrs. R. C. Earle's big garden at Upper Aramoho, was the meeting place for many members of the Garden Circle of the Wanganui Women's Club recently. The hydrangea collection, in particular, is a magnificent one, and the old garden-contains many examples | of fine trees and shrubs. Personals. . Mrs. J. Lemon, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. H. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ballinger, Wellington, and family, have been the guests of Mr. Hi J. Cameron, Turakina. Miss N. Russell has returned from the races in Wellington. Mrs. Hi C. Taylor and Miss P. Taylor are spending the holidays at Paraparaumu. Mrs. S. Nancarrow has returned from Wellington. Mrs. J. P. Luke is a Wanganui visitor to Wellington. Mrs. V. Frost, Taranaki, is staying with Mr." arid Mrs. J. B. Clay, GonviKe. Mrs. W. Stewart is visiting Hawera. Miss S. Latham, of the Solway College staff, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Latham, returns to Masterton this week. Mrs. J. C. Small is visiting Wellington. Miss O. Mcßeth is visiting Mrs. Morton Jones at Wellington. Miss M. Quin is a Wanganui visitor to Wellington. Mrs. Eric Jackson, Nelson, is the guest of Miss Clouston, "Atholbank." Miss I. Bain, Napier, is visiting the Misses Quin, St. John's Hill. Mr. and Mrs. J. Cornfoot have returned to Bulls from Wellington.

A quick way to bake potatoes in their jackets is to put them in boiling water first. Simmer very gently for ten minutes and then take out and dry. Place the potatoes in the oven. They will be cooked in half the time, and will be beautifully floury inside.
