SAVING OF PETROL
ASSISTANCE TO BRITAIN
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. "From the lips of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, himself, I have had it definitely that this country can help Britain greatly in regard to the dollar exchange by reducing its petrol consumption," said the Deputy Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) at a civic reception tonight. "It has been emphasised," Mr. Fraser said, "that it will be a valuable contribution to the war effort if petrol can be rationed. When I think of the sacrifices and suffering of the people of the British Isles, it seems but a small contribution for us to use less petrol."
