WELLINGTON RAGES

CENTENNIAL MEETING

FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

OVERCAST WEATHER

i (By "Ariki Toa.") Although there was a distinct change in the weather for the final day of the, Wellington Racing Club's Centennial Meeting at Trentham today rain had ceased when- racing commenced, though the weather was dull and overcast. ' 1 With no exception the fields paraded were again of solid dimensions without being unwieldy, and/ as on previous days the. racing provided an abundance of thrills for a particularly large attendance. The track'was not materially affected by the rain overnight, though it was easier than on the other days. ■.. Results up to time of going to press were:— WALLACEVILLE HIGHWEIGHT, £350-1 mile. 4_3_j. a. Betts's blk g Sky Limit, ; by Sky Blue—Rangitere,' syrs, 9.0 (P. Burgess) • • 1 2—2—Mrs. E. J. Time, Imin 44sec. (Winner trained by,B. J. Kelleher, ; ' Opaki.) Although one of the first to begin, Sky Limit was soon steadied in the early stages of the Wallaceville ; Highweight, but he could be noticed making a forward move approaching the turn. Once in line he finished too well for the pacemakers, and although the margin was small it was. decisive. Thrasos momentarily looked like winning a furlong from home, after enjoying an excellent run throughout, and he only went under in the last few strides. The Ring, came from, the.rear to cut Lord Puck out of the money, but the latter should have taken a lot more beating, being made too. much use of out in front with Acrobat. HQPEFUL STAKES, £500; for two- ,) year-olds; 5 furlongs. 6—7— T. H. Lowry's br c Lambourn, . by Bulandshar—April Fool, car. 7.5J (H. McDonald. Awapuni;) Although racing in the bunch at the false-rail, Lambourn finished too well for the opposition in the Hopeful Stakes, and he won. goin^ away by a length and a half from the favou te, Air Flight, who made a valiant attempt to lead air the; way after drawing the extreme outside. Doria appeared to be squeezed back soon after straightening up and she did well to secure third money,'just overhauling Absolve in the last couple of strides. ; Grandora and Triple Crown both showed speed but did not run on. while Kentucky never goC out of the ruck. ; MELROSE HANDICAP, £350; 7 furlongs. * v ■ l_l_O. Roberts's eh f Lady Tinkle, . by Defoe—Horomea. 3yrs, 9.2 (A. Jenkins) ........... .. 1 4-^4 —W. A. lorns's br c Areas, by^ Hunting Song—Callisto, • 3yrs, ; 8.0 (W. J. Broughton) ... 2 2—3—P. W.Jennings). ! t Won by a length and a haif, with a neck between second and third. Time, Imin 28$ sec.

(Winner trained by^.W., H.. Hume, Levin.) Lady Tinkle made full use of a favoui'able barrier, draw, when she hit the front, inside of the first furlong in the Melrose Handicap, and she stayed there to the finish. She was closely, attended by Military Maid until passing the false rail, where she quickly settled all challenges and won going away. Areas was always prominent, and he ran on very resolutely to hold off the fast-finishing Algerian, who received a very poor passage over the final furlong. Both Malik Kafur and Military Maid suffered .checks in the straight, while Myarion, who was badly left at the start, ran on very well for sixth place. Kilometre was showing up at *the turn, but did not run on. . * ' SUMMER HANDICAP, £1000; 1 mile and 3 furlongs. I—l—R. Stewart's br c Beau Vite, by Pere—Dominant, 3yrs, 8.13 (B. H. Won by two lengths; a length and a half. Time, 2min 20sec.

: Beau Vite proved himself to be one of the best three-year-olds in the Dominion when he outclassed the opposition in the Summer Cup. He got away splendidly, but was quickly restrained in about fourth; position. He -was still occupying .the same place rounding the turn, but once his rider asked hhn a question he went away from his field to win in effortless style. Norseman, ninth at > the half-mile,, moved up sharply approaching the false rail and ran on'well to, hold off Thermidor, who made a fine.effort in the straight after being near the rear at the turn. Lady Montana only weakened in the last few strides, as did Boldstep, and next to finish; were* Queen 76f Song, Moorsotis; Mishna, and Willie Win. ■ THAMES JOpKEY CUUBi \ . _ _ <■ ■ -~' (By Telegraph—Press Association.) » THAMES, This Day.
