CAR IN COLLISION
CHARGE OF INTOXICATION
On charges of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car and with driving a motor vehicle without being the holder of a driver's licence James Maloney, a hairdresser, 27 years of age, residing at Sutherland Road, Wellington, appeared in the Lower Hutt Court this morning before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Sergeant J. W. McHolm _said that the accused was apparently returning from the races and in High Street, opposite Boulcott Street at 7.50 p.m., he crossed over to his wrong side and collided with a car parked against the footpath. He then shot off across the road on to the cycle track and struck a concrete telegraph post, which was knocked out of position and brought down the wires. The accused' refused to state where he had been after the races. It was estimated that his speed was 40 m.p.h. His employer, a widow in business as a tobacconist, was with him in the car, which was her property. The accused admitted having had several drinks and had no driver's licence. He was a married man with one child.
At this stage, the accused asked for a remand in order to consult his solicitor. The remand was granted, but the Magistrate stated that the accused' \pould not be allowed to reverse his'plea of guilty. Bail (£25) was received.
