SUNK DURING TESTS
TANKER STRIKES MINE

LONDON, January 21. When leaving port for tests after being refitted, the British tanker Caroni River (7807 tons) sank off the south-west coast after striking a mine which was drifting ashore on the incoming tide. The crew of 35 were rescued, many being injured. Some were thrown into the air and crashed on the deck.
, The sinking was witnessed by people on shore who were looking at the wreck of the steamer Liverpool, which was blown ashore in a gale on January 1.
