WANGANUI NOTES

CASTLECLIFF BEACH

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

i During these glorious summer days all the beaches near Wanganui are favourite picnic spots, especially Cas-. tleclifiV with its easy access. Castlecliff is quite a historic place, for there | the great navigator, Kupe, who is credited with disco vering^ New Zealand, landed. Entering the river mouth, he namfed his resting place "Kai hau o Kupe" (the wind-eating of Kupe). This happened some 900 years before Captain Cook' arrived, when Alfred the Great, was ruling in England! Today there is quite a big settlement there, and most of the houses are occupied all the year round. A forlorn object on the beach which still rouses interest is the : liner, the Port Bowen, which: disturbs the set of the sea and causes currents and holes. AH this means added work for that fine body, the : . Ca'stlecliff Surf Life-saving Club; In spite of repeated warnings people persist in bathing hear the wreck, although there is literally miles of sea. coast. For Brides-elect.
