CENTENNIAL MEETING

SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM

PERFECT WEATHER

Although the morning was dull and .somewhat threatening, light rain falling early, the weather cleared and the Wellington Racing Club again enjoyed splendid conditions for the continuation of the Centennial Cup Meeting at Trentham today. Attracted by the promise of another interesting days sport, there was a large attendance. The Jight rain early proved beneficial to the track, and the best of conditions were offering for the actual racing. Good fields were carded m each event, the inclusion of a number of fresh horses assisting towards obscuring the form of the opening day, and racing of a very high standard was forthcoming. Following are the results of the races up to the time of going to press:— MANGAROA HIGHWEIGHT, £350; 1 mile and 3 furlongs. 2_2~D. J. Barry's b h Raana, by Hunting- Song—Rautorea, syrs, 10.6 (C. Carroll) 1 9_B_j. M. Paul's b m Hunting Moments, by Hunting SongMont Mint, 4yrs, 9.6 (S. Anderson) • 6—6— G. R. McDonald's b f Scold, by Myosotis—Berate, 3yrs, 9.0 (H. W. Hibberd) ••• 3 Also started: 4-4 Small Boy 10.7 (W. E Pine), 1-1 Prime Quality 10.6 (P. Burgess), 5-5 Morning Flight 10.2 (A. Jenkins), 13-14 Shy 10.1 (J. Nicolson), 7-9 Limbohm 9.8 (P. Jarvis), 10-17 Good Sun 9.8 (L. Nesbitt), 8-10 The Ring 9.3 (C. .L. Kerr), 17-17 Haupongi car 9.2 (L. Gough), 11-12 Little Robin 9 0 (J. Toki), 12-11 Esperance Bay 9.0 (R Hawes), 18-18 Etzel 9.0 (R. Won by a "neck; third horse half a head away. Time, 2min 21£ sec. Showing considerable improvement on his first day's form Raana won the Mangarda Highweight narrowly but decisively. He was far from well placed early * but moved up crossing the top, at which stage he was seventh. '-Thereafter he-wore down the leaders to get up in time to beat Hunting Moments. The latter, in company with Scold, made the running practically throughout, and it was only in the last couple of strides that she was touched off. Scold also held on well and was only the narrowest of margins back. Morning Flight and Little Robin .both came from some distance back to be next to finish, with Small Boy handy, the last-named having, been a trifle slow to begin. Prime Quality was labouring in the rear division, and did comparatively well to finish seventh, but-King's Toast again faded out. TRIAL PLATE,- £300; 7 furlongs. 2—2— T. H. Lowry's br f Millament, i by Beau Pere—Drama, 3yrs, 8.0 (W. J. Broughton) ....... 1 s_s__G. A. Lang and G. B. Walden's br f Military Maid, by Captain Bunsby—Afterglow, ~;, -3yrs,;B.o^.(L. J. ■. Won by a length; third horse four lengths away. Time, lmin 262 sec. :: The dispatch for the Trial Plate was an unfortunate one-for backers of the favourite, Algerian, for he got away very badly, while the third elect, Desert Sun, was also slow to move. Areas and Prediction benefited when .the. barrier rose, but positions underwent quick changes, Military Mai^jt and Earl's Court taking up the running '■■■ with Millament handy. The two leaders carried on until well into , the : straight, where. Millament put in her , claim and, kept up to her work, won going away. Areas finished fairly well for third money, with Debretts a good fourth. Earl's Court weakened and . Buccaneer and Dark Water were next. Moradabad failed to keep.her place in the second furlong. JANUARY HANDICAP, £450; i mile. 1—1 —T. Coltman's eh g Haughty Winner, by Winning Hit —Dis- . . dainful, syrs, 9.0 (L; J. Ellis) .. 1 3_3_F. Smith's br h Full Hand, by The Ace—Volimond; 4yrs, 8.8 (R. Ellis), 8-9 Royal Star II 8.2 (C. G. Goulsbro'), 10-10 Trebor 8.1 (H. J. Callahan), 6-6 Gay Mimic 7.13 (H. Wiggins), 7-7 Lord Cavendish car. 8.0 (G. R..Tattersall), 4-4 Colonel Bogey 7.13 ' (W. J. Broughton), 11-11 Flame Queen 7.11 (C. T. Wilson). (Winner trained by C. McCarthy, Riccarton.) Won by half a length; third horse a head away/ Time, lmin 39isec. Full Hand, who had run disappointingly on the opening day, made a bold bid to win the January Handicap from Start to finish. He was a length clear approaching the distance, but Haughty Winner, who was compelled to lodge his challenge from several places back, -was steadily making up his leeway, and he finished just a shade too well for the Aucklander. Laughing Lass, fifth early, was handy to the pace-makers-on straightening up, but she did not finish as resolutely as anticipated, although getting to within a head of Full Hand. Flame Queen showed up half a mile from home and held on for fourth, but Colonel Bogey retired before the business end and was never actually dangerous.
