WATCH AND WAIT

INTERCEPTING MEN OF

GERMAN LINER

(Received January 19, 9 a.m.)

OAKLAND, January 18.

A plan to embark 512 officers and members of the crew of the scuttled German liner Columbus on the Japanese steamer Tatutamaru has been abandoned coincidental with reports that three cruisers, two of which incoming mariners asserted were Australian and the other Canadian, were lying off the Golden Gate.

Th? Germans have been temporarily, housed in the quarantine station on Angel Island. It is understood that they will leave later in small groups, in an effort to thwart general capture.

Fifty-seven persons—men of nonmilitary age, cabin boys, and stewardesses—from the Columbus sailed for Germany in the Italian liner Eex.
