The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, announced in the House of Commons the repayment of the 4^ per cent, conversion loan, 1940-44, issued in 1924.
Formal notice of repayment af the earliest date for \§rhich the option was given to the Government in the terms of the loan will be gazetted tonight, and holders are being offered as an alternative to repayment conversion at par into a new loan —a short-term 2 per cent, conversion loan to be repaid at par on July 1, 1945, with the right to the Treasury to redeem it at par in whole or part on or after July 1, 1943.
Sir John Simon expressed the fullest confidence that holders would convert to the fullest possible extent.
