CUT PROPOSED

U.S. NAVAL VOTE

EXTRA TONNAGE HALVED

(Received January 19, 10.30 a.m.)

WASHINGTON, January IS.

The Chairman of the Naval Affairs Committee, Congressman C. Vinson, said it was proposed to cut the 1,300,000,000 dollars naval construction authorisation to 800,000,000 dollars, eliminating 34 destroyers and reducing the tonnage of the proposed expansion from 400,000 to 218,000.

The new craft would include thx'ee aircraft-carriers, 34 submarines, and an unspecified number of cruisers. It would leave to the discretion of the naval authorities the specific numbers to be built within the authorised tonnage.

Congressman Vinson said it would be possible, for instance, to build four 27,500-ton cruisers, compared with the present limit of 10,000 tons.
