SHOWMEN FINED
LIQUOR AT EXHIBITION
The sale of liquor at the Centennial Exhibition last month led to the appearance in the Magistrate's Court today of W. F. Pope and N. Callaghan, both stall-holders in Playland. Pope was charged with selling liquor in a no-licence area and Callaghan with keeping liquor for sale in a no-licence area. They pleaded guilty and were fined £2 10s and costs' each.
Sub-Inspector D. J. O'Neill, who prosecuted, said that the defendants were in partnership at the Exhibition. When the police had made a raid they found 105 quart bottles of beer, together with a quantity of wine at Callaghan's stall, and 24 quart bottles of beer, seven bottles of whisky, and a bottle of gin at Pope's stall.' A police officer had earlier purchased beer from Pope. The excuse given by the defendants was that they were genuinely hard; up ; ■■'■'.. , .;■./■..■• \
Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, who appeared for the defendants, said that a group of showmen at the Exhibition had purchased, some liquor for their own consumption and this had been stored by his clients. ; They had not intended to sell the liquor, but a certain laxness had crept in. . •
