WANGANUI WINS

THIRD TIME LUCKY

CORNWELL CUP CONTEST

For three years B. Armitt and C. Armitt, twin members of the Wanganui Sailing Club, have taken part in the Cornwell Cup contests, and this year they were successful, -gaining their third and decisive win over their most persistent rivals, Auckland, in the concluding raca of the series, sail-d this morning".

At .the conclusion of yesterday's racing Wangan'ui and Auckland had each scored two wins, and Christchurch, Wellington, and Otago one, each. The cup goes to the crew first to win three times. Today a light southerly prevailed, and skill in hand-, ling the small craft was necessary Xo\ gain any advantage in, the fickle breeze. The course was from the clubhouse to tower buoy, round shoal buoy and ; Kio Bay buoy back to the clubhouse, twice round. Finishing times, were as follows:— (Start 9.30 a.m.) j Wanganui llh 24m 7s 1 . Auckland ...... llh 26m Is Tauranga ...... H" 26m 38s! Wellington''did not start. Wanganui were first away, followed by Christchurch and Otago, with the others in: a bunch, but Paremata crossed the- line too soon and were recalled. The Wanganui boat rounded the tower buoy first* followed by Lytteltonand Tauranga. With all. sail set, Wanganui made good time to' the shoal- buoy, j establishing a handy lead from Lyttelton, Tauranga, Auckland, : Paremata, and Plimmerton, who were fairly evenly spaced out. •*•■■/. Ninety seconds ahead, Wanganui headed northwards with plenty .to spare, Auckland, in third; -place, con- j centrating on overhauling Lyttelton. Tauranga and Plimmerton were lying handy, but the rest, were a long way back. Lyttelton picked up a bit on the; run up to K\p, and stole back 50 seconds of Wanganui's lead by the time the -buoy was A rounded. Just around the buoy Auckland slipped into second place, and appeared' <6 have at least a fighting chance, but on the tricky beat bpek to tower buoy the Wanganui boys sailed their boat well, going round 80 seconds ahead of Auckland, with Tauranga displacing Lyttelton in third position. The race was all but over, and, maintaining their lead, Wanganui finished the course in expert style to register a popular win.
