RACE TRAFFIC
UNUSUALLY HEAVY
FULL CO-OPERATION
Traffic to and from Trentham yesterday was unusually heavy for a day that was not a public holiday but full co-pperation between the traffic officers of the Transport Department and the motorists led to the stream of Cars being handled without a hitch at any stage. .-Two slips in the Taita Gorge made conditions more difficult than normally, but traffic officers were posted at the slips and no trouble occurred.
Between 5".30 and 6.40 p.m. there Was an unbroken line of cars from Trentham towards the city, but the control worked so smoothly that not a single accident occurred. There wer-e several contacts but nothing strong enough to strain a bumper. A large percentage,of the cars were from qutside Wellington, number plates from Bluff to the far north being, seen. Some South Island motorists expressed surprise when they were asked to travel faster, but the general comment was praise for the efficient way in which the traffic was handled with a minimum of delay. Even heavier traffic is expected tomorrow and on Monday, and every precaution is being taken to avoid both accidents and delay.
