IDLE ALONG CUP

THE FOURTH RACE

WANGANUI WIN

I Showing unexpectedly good sailing qualities, the Wanganui crew, F. Bethwaite and S. Wall, won the fourth Idle Along race yesterday afternoon. They were always among the leading four for the first two laps of the triangular course and went ahead on the last round to win by 58 seconds from Canterbury, with Wellington third and Bay of Plenty fourth. Points of the leading competitors after this race were:—Wellington 19, Canterbury 17, Bay of Plenty 15, Wanganui 14. The afternoon race was sailed three times round the triangular course starting from • Jerningham and going to Fraser Rock to a leeward mark off Kaiwarra and back to Jerningham. The boats were to have used the same leeward mark as that of the Sanders Cup fleet but before they could make it the first time v it drifted away and the Idle Alongs thereafter used another one, about a mile away to windward. All boats carried two. except for West Coast, Otago, and South Auckland with ihree eacsa.

Wanganui and . Bay of Plenty had the best of the start at 3.22 p.m. with Wellington, Canterbury, and ■ South Auckland coming next and Marlborough badly last, and the race developed into a contest between the Canterbury.. Wanganui,-Bay of Plenty, and Wellington boats. % Wanganui led the way at Fraser Rock* the first time

from Bay of Plenty and Canterbury, but on the run to leeward Bay of Plenty went to the front. On the beat to Jerningham the first time Canterbury went ahead of Bay of Plenty, leading them round the mark by 11 seconds, with Wanganui three seconds back in third place and Wellington fourth. Approaching Jerningham the second time Canterbury apparently mistook the number of laps and prepared to finish but were waved on after pulling up their plate and losing a few seconds. They were still followed by Wanganui, Bay of Plenty, and Wellington in that order, but on the last round the Wanganui boys showed their mettle and sailed into the lead, the finishing times being:— Wanganui, 2h 6m 28s 1 Canterbury, 2h 7m 26s 2 Wellington* 2h 8m 33s .... .... 3 Bay of Plenty, 2h 8m 48s, 4; Marlborough, 2h 13m 12s, 5; Nelson, 2h 14m 17s, 6; South Canterbury, 2h 15m Bs, 7; Hawke's Bay, 2h 15m 40s, 8; West Coast, 2h 17m 555, 9; South Auckland, 2h 18m 17s, 10; Otago, 2h 18m ,455, 11. ■
