TOURNEY NEARS END

SINGLES SEMI-FINALS

PLAY "IN- FOURS

Nature gave her .best today for the elimination games, in the .Centennial bowling tournament, and some splendid games were witnessed by. large galleries on the .bank. ~-... . Chief public interest was centred in the closing stages .of the Dominion singles, at Thorndon, though. a great many' spectators went to Wellington arid Kelburn greens where the knock* out rounds of the fours were being played.- r - .• . ' In the singles this morning H. Squire (Hawera) defeated C. Spearman .(Sydenham) arid G; A. Deare (Carlton)beat R. Rolls (Featherston). .This left Deare with two lives and Squire with one life. ..Deare had only to beat Squire to take the title, with two lives in hand. The Taranaki man was tod steady.for the Aucklander and in the game which proved to be the semifinal he got;home' by the comfortable, margin of 20-11. These two are meeting again in the final on the Thorndon green this afternoon, Deare still having one life. This is by no means Squire's first excursion into high places in Dominion tourneys. . Iri 1933 he won the New Zealand pairs title, with H. S. Maslin as his lead..---He was playing for Maslin in the fours and went out yesterday after two games in the postsection play. Spearman ..also lost his pairs game this morning against Lawrie .(Island Bay) and thus a potential title-holder goes out of all sections. In^ the fours tourney . elimination [rounds W. Bremner (West End, Auckland), winner of the rinks in' 1924 and 11929, was eliminated by W. F. Hadwin (Hutt) at Kelburn, losing 27-19. Other one-lifers put out were Smith i (Thorndon), Bull (Blenheim), Mc : •Whannell (Hataitai), Greville (Dargaville), Lobb (West End, New Plymouth), Bain (Marlborough R.S.A.), land Russell (St. Heliers). The rinks competition is now. reduced to three two-lifers and eight one-lifers. The two-lifers are Livingstone (Onehunga), Bell (Tauranga), and Dickin- | son (Avon). .
