LOCAL REQUIREMENT

BIG DRIVE PLANNED

MEETING TO BE HELD

Steps to institute a big drive for the 1000 recruits required from the Wellington and Hutt Valley area by January 12 under the national campaign launched this week have already been undertaken. Following on the statement by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) a preliminary consultation was held this morning with the civic authorities, who have promised the fullest possible assistance.

In the absence of the Mayor the Deputy Mayor (Councillor M. F. Luckie), after an interview with the No. 5 Area Staff Officer (Major E. F. J. Reeves), has arranged to issue invitations to the Mayors of Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Eastbourne, and Petone, and the chairman of the Johnsonville [Town Board, and representatives of all organisations—business, social, and. sporting—throughout Wellington and Hutt Valley to attend a meeting in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. This meeting will plan the local campaign with the object of giving the appeal the greatest possible publicity. The various organisations to be invited to send representatives to the meeting include the following:—The j Wellington Regimental Territorial Association (including the Eastbourne, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Karori, Lower Hutt, and Upper Hutt Associations), the Fort Dorset Territorial Association and the Scottish Company, Corps of New Zealand Engineers and Corps of Signals Territorial Associations, the Returned Soldiers' Association, the New Zealand Defence League, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Wellington Manufacturers' Association, Wellington Commercial Travellers' Association, New Zealand Founders' Society ( V.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., Masonic Grand Lodge, Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, Cricket Association, rowing clubs, golf clubs, Rugby football clubs, Association football clubs, baseball clubs, yachting clubs, swimming and life-saving clubs, the ' Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, Townswomen's guilds. Pioneer Club, Victoria League, Wellington Women's Club, Navy League, St. John Ambulance Association, Wellington Red Cross Society, Plunket Society, Empire League, United Services Club, Wellesley Club, Trades and Labour Council, Wellington Racing and Trotting Clubs, Civil Service Association, Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, Wellington. Harbour Board, Hutt Valley Power Board, and the Wellington Retailers'"Association.

It is expected that there will be keen competition between the various centres in filling their respective quotas and the Wellington Area is determined on a flying start.
