OIL IN ENGLAND
BORE AT ALLERTON
A PROMISING OUTLOOK
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, December 12
"For the first time in history oil is now being produced in commercial quantities in England, a well sunk at Allerton, in Nottinghamshire, six months ago. being operated successfully," stated Mr. S. D. Rogers, an American geologist, who is a passenger to California by the Monterey.
Mr. Rogers said that the firm with which he is associated had been instrumental in discovering the field eighteen months ago. The prospects from a geological point of view were excellent. Hitherto small wells had been operating from which a few barrels had been obtained daily, .but the Allerton bore placed a different complexion on the future position. He understood that additional wells were being sunk in. the vicinity. The search for- oil throughout the world had been intensified in recent years. Actually there was no shortage, or potential shortage of- oil. The recent discovery of huge oil-bearing formations in Iran and the island of Bahrein assured the world of future supplies for countless years. The problem was one of distribution and the efforts of the big companies were directed towards the discovery of fields in consuming countries. This, he said, would, explain the intensification of the search in New Zealand. ■
