AUSTIN SCOBIE'S DEATH

A tragic sequel was associated with the visit of Victoria's doyen of trainers, James Scobie, to the Bendigo Meeting recently. During the first day the death occurred at South Yarra of one of his sons, Austin James, and it was the painful duty of one of the old friends of the family, who had been immediately communicated with, to notify the father of his bereavement. It was not until a er the running of the Bendigo Cup, in which Scobie had Lusson engaged, that he learned of his son's death, and the news prostrated him. His condition late in the afternoon was such that it was feared he would not be able to return to Melbourne for some time, but he had recovered sufficiently the following "day to undertake the journey.

The late Austin Scobie was in his 50th year. He leaves a widow. For many years he had been well known in racing circles, principally as an assistant to his father in the management of the large string of horses which the stable sheltered.
