SOUTH AFRICAN WOOL

As recently announced the British Government has agreed to purchase most of South Africa's wool clip at 10"d a lb. For the year ended June 30 last South Africa sold 800,000 bales of wool at an average of B£d compared with 9£d for 1937-38 and 12gd for 1936-37. The wool is mainly merino. In October exports of greasy wool from South Africa were equivalent to 20,990 bales compared with 63.623 bales in the corresponding month of 1938. On the open market the South African clip may or may not realise higher values relatively than the Australian clip under the British purchase scheme, states Winchcombe, Carson, and Co. But consumers will not buy raw materials unless the shipping facilities are available to transport it. Sales are not being made in South Africa at the rate appraisements are being conducted in Australia. The wool is being appraised more quickly than shipments are being made.
