SOUTH ISLAND LAMB TRADE.
i The excellent condition of the Canterbury lambs coming forward was a feature of the opening of the killing season on Monday when all freezing works in Canterbury, with the exception of Kaiapoi, commenced operations. Lambs from the Christchurch area averaged 361b and were specially commented upon. Most of the works opened with supplies of stock enabling them to work a three-quarter day and that rate is likely to be maintained for the next fortnight. It is not expected that there will be a rush to have stock killed early, as under existing conditions it is more profitable to the farmer to send his stock to the works as heavy as possible. The North Canterbury Co-operative Freezing Company opened its season yesterday.
