(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Five years ago anyone predicting the type of service which has been conducted by the Controller of the Commercial Broadcasting Service on Sunday' evenings since the establishment of the ZB stations would have been ridiculed. Had he predicted such statements as that delivered by the Controller on Sunday evening he certainly would have been told that no self-respecting community would put up with that sort of thing from a public servant in his official capacity as head of a public utility. The occasion having arisen; what are the people going to do about it? Are they prepared to allow the official in question to go to any lengths he may deem fit? Are they too docile, too , pathetic to protest? Is a State utility to be used as a means of converting the Sabbath into a day for Socialistic propaganda?

It should be remembered .that some time ago the same official criticised political opponents of the Government and later, when a hubbub arose, tendered his resignation. It should also be remembered that the Prime Minister declined to accept the resignation; and, furthermore, took no action to prevent a' recurrence of such an offence.

At the moment there are indications that the.Broadcasting Services are to be. used for political purposes. If that should happen, then would not , the freedom of the people be seriously endangered?—l am, etc.

JOHN BRITTAIN.
